Watkin Maddy was a genius, who achieved academic excellence at Cambridge, being elected a Fellow of St. John's College. He was a foundling member of the Royal Astronomical Society and authored a textbook in astronomy which remained the standard university text for a number of years. Forced to take Orders to maintain his fellowship, Maddy became a curate at Sparkford, Somerset, but the scruples of his conscience would not let him remain in this post. Giving up all, he removed to London, where he was befriended by James Bourne, who he lodged with and whose discriminating and Christ exalting ministry he came to love. Having resigned his fellowship, Maddy lived a humble existence for the remainder of his days. Though Maddy left little on record for us, what is left has a sweet savour of the work of Christ in the soul.
